An Opportunity Erupts

When my daughter, Elisabeth, decided she wanted to be homeschooled, it wasn't as easy as saying, "Let's do it!" Her dad needed a little convincing. He didn't have much familiarity with homeschoolers, so I can understand his reservations, and he was afraid she wouldn't be able to learn all she needed to know. Truthfully, I think he still has concerns.

However, Elisabeth was committed to the idea and so she set out to prove to him that she can learn at home. She settled on learning about Pompeii during her free time, after school and on school holidays. And learn she did! The girl impressed me with her enthusiasm, joy and commitment to mastering this material. I wanted her to show that she can learn a broad array of subjects, so while she read and wrote about Pompeii, she also studied volcanos, geology, archaeology, latin, Roman Numerals, and Roman Empire history, covering a lot of material in very little time.

When she had finished writing a report, she typed it on her own. I assisted her with editing. Then we printed images and I helped her organize her presentation, but she did almost all of the work! She then presented it to her teachers and taught all of us quite a bit about the city of Pompeii, the Roman Empire, volcanic explosions, and more. Her dad was persuaded to let us give this thing a try.

So, for fourth grade we have the privilege of embarking on this journey of homeschooling. Hurray!
